Mantle mirror

I rescued an old mantle piece with attached mirror from a house that is going to be razed.?
It's in beautiful condition. I believe the house was from 1880's. The piece was custom made for the house. I also took out , don't know what you really call it. It's the archway thing? Covers the archway, has two columns on the sides sitting on a stand, decorative molding all over etc.... ANYWAY. My question is I found a signature on both peices that said LOHR written in cursive. How do I find out about these pieces and the maker. My discription does not do the pieces justice , beleive me! My froend thinks the 6 1/2 ft mantel is worth over $800.00 and the archway thing which is 10 ft across and perfect , over $3,000.00 I think both are oak? Hmmm any suggestions?
I did find the other lohr guy, not the right one though. THe house is in Hanover PA near the UTZ factory
Look in the town records. Many towns had someone who did a majority of the decorative carpentry in the town. What a great salvage. You'll probably find that it was just one of the towns folk, but that doesn't make it less desirable or valuable. Sounds like a fun project, let us know if you find the guy and tell us what you learn about him. I wish you had included a picture, I love that stuff. We just rescued a 4 X 6 piece of malachite that was on the face of a store front about to be demolished. It was brought by boat from Russia in the early 1800's. We had it installed as a fireplace hearth. It's so gorgeous, can you believe they would have destroyed it???

Mirror on the Mantle Shelf - The Toxic Garden Gnomes 1984
Do I remove the floor to ceiling mirrors in my l/r, cover them, or keep them?
I have an entire wall of floor to ceiling beveled mirrors that are in grooved channels and glued to the wall. The whole wall. I just bought an electric fireplace with an oak mantle and it doesn't really go with the mirrors. They were here when I bought the house. Do I remove them, (uh, professionally), somehow cover them up with paneling of some kind, or just leave them there with the f/p in front? help?
No, have the mirrors removed professionally. With something as classic as oak, the mirrors (very sixties art deco) clashes. And your room need not look smaller. Opposite to the fireplace, if possible, hang a large picture mirror with a frame that matches the rest of your decor. It will still help to open up the room without seeming tacky.
Covering them up is a bad idea. What if something happens to your house and (for example) and electrician needs to get behind them?
I lived in a house once where the entire master bedroom was wall to wall mirrors (guess what the previous tenants' hobbies were) and couldn't wait to get rid of them. I don't think they are the best design choice for a living room or bedroom!

RT Took down the old mantle So now the question is: no mantle (large art or mirror instead) or new mantle (probably made of reclaimed wood)?

If we were on CSI they'd have some mad technological magic which would enable us to not only normalise the photo, but zoom in and get a picture perfect image of the person taking the photo reflected in the mantle mirror, plus some important clue that would lead us to the exact disused warehouse the killer is hiding out at.
What a great introduction to her 1st Dibs shop. I wish I could visit her store in Houston. I’m dreaming of the over-mantle mirror please… Susan

thats a wierd story, why would you breast feed a cat?????????
anyhow, 6/10
Coincidence? Yes. Dad dropped some photo boxes by over the holiday and I went Saturday to return them to their proper storage place. While in the neighborhood I went over to “the house” and peaked into the backyard to see how much the new owners have changed it.
Just then two women, dressed and carrying gifts, walked up and asked if we could be helped. I explained that I grew up in the house and was just looking to see what changed. Two broad smiles crossed their faces. One lady said it was her birthday and her friend who lived here was giving her a party. They invited me in to look around. I hesitated but knew that I would kick myself later for passing up a chance to go inside.
The entryway was exactly the same but they replaced the basement door with a new one (probably doesn't slam shut now). Everything about the first floor landing was exactly the same (except for the belongings of the new resident, of course). The landing midway between the floors had a carpet, coat rack and chest to make a nice entryway to the upstairs. The telltale sloped stairs were there except that they were still slightly corrected with the brace Dad put in before the sale.
It was so wierd to walk into the 2nd floor apartment. Even though their stuff was there it really felt like coming home. They changed a lot but when I think about it they are only minor changes – wall color, new kitchen cabinets, and furnishings. But it really is still the old place.
I couldn't believe how small my bedroom looked. It seemed absolutely tiny. The bathroom was still the same – same blue tile on the wall, claw foot tub, and black and white checkered tile floor. I told her not to strip the door of paint because Nike tore up the door and it's all wood puddy under there. She was grateful for the info.
They took out the accessway to the attic and put new drywall in the ceiling. They also took out the hutch but the mantle mirror (always my favorite piece) is still there. I was glad to see they didn't paint over any of the naturally stained trim.
They were very nice for letting us peak inside so we left quickly so not to intrude on their party. All the women were very friendly. It was a nice unexpected trip down memory lane. I was just going to write to you about it so I think something made all of us think of the same place at the same time.
I've done research on the house itself. The building itself was built in 1899 by an Irish man (can't remember his name right now). There were about 3-4 different families that owned the building before us. One of them was the Anna and Peter Schmitt family and they lived there a long time like we did. I was always curious about how the house changed over that 100 year time span. I'd see a paint chip come off the wall and think, huh, this room used to be pink, or green, or blue. I wonder what they thought of the house when they drove by and wondered who lived inside – just as we do now.

I didn't read the whole thing, but you switched from present tense in the beginning to past tense near the end. I would make the entire thing past tense. You also have some grammatical errors. Other than that it's alright, maybe a 5 or 6.
Well you've managed to hit every cliche in the book. Waking up, getting dressed, looking in the mirror, addressing the reader. Then the whole thing with the cat and the breast…I don't understand. It's just disturbing.
