   LoL I have an old vanity like that in storage right now — 30′s vintage, with a large round mirror. The mirror, at last report, is not as young as it used to be — but then, who is? Anyway, I love that old vanity, and wish I had a place for it and its matching dresser. It will be a real shame if it never gets used again. I take it that Hester’s body was never found. Hard to manage alone even for a strong woman. Is the thought that Mrs. Dean was somehow complicit, or is it possible that Peter Simkins just saw Hester where Mrs. Dean was actually sitting? Sometimes when I’m standing in front of a mirror, I see Angmar standing behind me. Does that count as a supernatural event? Or does that just mean he’s doing his job?

   Two points make me vow that the photo was not taken at Stuyvesant Casino:
   1. The backdrop. Stuyvesant did not have padding behind the bandstand. I believe there was a large mirror.
   2. Except for piano and drums, the musicians were not seated; they played standing.
   (Just a point of information. Or two. Stuyvesant Casino was terrific, despite being noisy, and the music often ragged. I miss it.)

   I’m so sorry to hear the mirror is no longered offered by Ballard Design. . .worth a phone call to them? I would think about a large round mirror instead. . .check out chest is just an old chest that I painted black and added Venetian mirrored decorative pulls from Anthropologie. Good luck with your search.

    These are overpriced compared to other similar telescopes on the market, largely because of their truss-tube design, which is complex and hard to keep aligned. I'd recommend similar telescopes with solid tubes, such as these from Orion:

    For more advanced information, read Phil Harrington's Star Ware, 4th edition (Wiley).

    You'll get the greatest value for your money with a Newtonian reflector on a Dobsonian mount, such as these:

    Buy from a store which specializes in telescopes and astronomy, either locally or online; don't buy from department stores, discount stores or eBay as mostly what they sell is junk. Find your local astronomy club and try out different telescopes at one of their star parties:

    I strongly recommend that beginners steer clear of astrophotography until they have learned their way around the sky. Astrophotography is by far the most expensive and difficult area of amateur astronomy.

    Many people who buy telescopes have no idea how to find interesting things to observe. A good introduction to finding things is NightWatch by Terence Dickinson (Firefly). A more advanced book is Star Watch by Phil Harrington (Wiley).
