   Warm it on the side of your cheek to get it the same temperature as your mouth and try to breathe through your nose. Also, you can try dipping the mirror in mouthwash before placing it in your mouth, this sometimes helps.

   “Upon gaining a less remote view, the ship, when made signally visible on the verge of the leaden-hued swells, with the shreds of fog here and there raggedly furring her, appeared like a white-washed monastery after a thunderstorm, seen perched upon some dun cliff among the Pyrenees. But it was no purely fanciful resemblance which now, for a moment, almost led Captain Delano to think that nothing less than a ship-load of monks was before him.” – pg. 36In the above passage, Captain Delano is in the middle of analyzing a ship spotted in the distance. I selected this passage because of its focus on perspective. As Captain Delano’s ship moves closer and changes direction, they see the mysterious ship from different angles and in a new way. “A less remote view” and words such as “visible” and “fog” mirror the importance of perspective that dominates most of “Benito Cereno.” This passage and the rest of the short novel demonstrates that you can look at life many different ways and that changing how you are looking at something can often relieve what it really is. In this passage in particular it is interesting that Captain Delano compares the ship to a “white-washed monastery after a thunderstorm.” This simile holds and demonstrates Captain Delano’s background, views, values, and culture. In fact Captain Delano constantly is limited by his perspective and is unable to get outside his own head and the socially prescribed norms he lives by. Captain Delano can only think from a white Christian perspective. He can only see the world and situations through his restricted eyes. Here Captain Delano conjures up monasteries and monks both of which are western and European concepts. In fact in reality the Negroes on the San Dominick most likely do not have monasteries back home and have never seen practicing monks. Also, along with the mention of established religion comes the concepts of colonization, that of which the Negroes are familiar with. The phrase “shreds of fog here and there” reflects and foreshadows the fogs of judgment Captain Delano experiences. Captain Delano’s judgment is fogged by his world views, which causes him to miss the big picture. For example, when Babo shaves Don Benito Cereno in the middle of the day, all Captain Delano can focus on is that this is not the proper or “normal” time to perform such a task. Captain Delano continuously does this throughout the story as he compares how the San Dominick is run to how he operates his own ship. Also, not in this passage but in many others, the word “strange” is used. However, what makes something strange? What makes something normal? These preconceived notions impact and impair Captain Delano’s ability to decipher the situation he encounters. Also, the racial discrimination is at a high and extremely evident throughout the short novel and in this passage. The darkness of a thunderstorm contrasted with the “white” ship, “purely,” and “dun” all highlight color and the contrast of color that consumes this time period. The word “dun” alone appears in Shakespeare and was usually used to describe a dark-skinned woman. The importance of this word here is evident in the fact that in Shakespeare’s time the whiter a woman’s skin was the more pure she was. In other words, being described as “dun” was an insult and seen as unattractive. This is important because these notions, the distinctions between white and dark, are at the core of Melville’s short novel, “Benito Cereno.”Moreover, the fact that this story takes place out at sea and that the mutiny occurs off land suggests two things. First that when away from society there is a greater risk of disturbing the status quo. However, because the Negroes are persecuted in the end and because I have shown above that social decorum still has a great effect on Captain Delano even while at sea, this story demonstrates that one cannot really escape from the social teachings that were engraved into their head.

   Coincidentally I just shaved 2 minutes ago, but not in the shower. For some reason I can never find an anti-fog mirror that actually works. Very rarely I’ll just shave in the shower without a mirror, and then finish up afterward, but it ends up feeling like more work. I just shave in the mirror right after the shower. When I first started shaving razors worried me and I tried using an electric shaver, but I have really thick hair that grows fast, so that didn’t work at all, because I’d be lazy and not shave for weeks, and the electric couldn’t handle it. In fact most blades don’t work very well for me, so far the best is the gilette fusions. Not the proglide, I dunno what they did, but imo they made it worse. 90% of the time I shave against the grain. 70% of the time my skin can handle it.

    I am a banker. Not a Wall Street banker. Just a small town Main Street banker. Some of us saw much of this coming. When we advised people to be cautious. When we told them to be cautious they looked at us like we were crazy. it was like trying to get a teenaged kid to stay home with mom and dad on a Saturday night. If you declined a deal they simply walked across the bank and got a loan for their crazy scheme.

    Too many people were speculating on Real Estate. It is interesting that the “Realtors” who pushed and pushed home sales and subprime mortgages and other creative loan programs were never called on the carpet for their participation and relationships with seedy mortgage brokers. In fact, many RE companies conveniently had “inhouse” mortgage companies. So, if you could fog a mirror you could get a loan. (Yes all this was provided by the big Wall Street Banks.) Think about who drove the mortgage referrals to bad subprime lenders. Yes Realtors! Realtors urged consumers to leverage up, it is just a fact. Think about it, sell a larger home earned a larger commission and then re-list it when the bank forecloses and sell it again and get more commissions. Realtors are laughing all the way to the bank to deposit commission checks. The Gov't did not properly regulate. The FDIC allowed some banks to wildly lend, while others conservatively watched. A few others, unfortunately, lost their discipline and entered into this flury of activity and are now suffering.

    Big party, too much temptation and now everyone has a substancial headache. I hope we have all learned a lesson.

    Tell you what, I think your comments are right on the mark.

    Having been a driver since about 1980 (started out driving water trucks to drilling rigs in Wyoming and fuel tankers from Wyoming into Utah) I think I've got a perspective on the driver issue. And, frankly, it ain't pretty.

    Where there are, indeed, lots of careful and responsible professionals out here, this industry has always had it's bad actors. There are a couple of things we might have been better off if they'd never happened. One of these was the movie “Smokey And The Bandit” which came out in 1977. Hate to say it, but (I think) this led to a big influx of people with gill slits and webbed feet in the late 70s and up through and into the 90s, even. The other thing was a program that, for a while, was making available large sums federal money for student loans for CDL training schools that were springing up like mushrooms for a while there back in the late 80s/early 90s. Pretty much anybody who could breathe on a mirror and fog it could qualify for a “student loan” and go to CDL school. If, after a couple of weeks, they could still fog a mirror, they'd be “graduated.”

    The advent of the CDL itself, has been blamed by many for the loss of lots of those seasoned, rock solid, old timer “knights of the road” types. While there's some unfortunate truth to this, it also helped rid the industry of a certain element that, frankly, needed to be eliminated; careless and/or incompetent operators with multiple citations, multiple accidents, and multiple licenses from multiple states. Unfortuanately, there's just something about this job that seems to attract badasses and sociopaths (borderline and confirmed). You can turn off the CB so you don't have to listen to them, but you see them and their sign everywhere. You see them taligating, speeding excessively — or just driving too fast for conditions — and cutting off other traffic whenever they can. You see their tons of trash in the shrinking number of places you can still park a truck. You see their graffiti in the restrooms. And watch your step when you get out of your truck on the way to that restroom; you don't want to step in somebody's discarded poop bag. We like to say these are a minority, and I think they may be, but I suspect they're a bigger minority than we'd maybe like to admit. Anybody who denies we got our problems is probably one of those problems.

    The only motor racing I used to care about was F1 and long distance (Le Mans, etc). Rallies were a distant 3rd. I lost touch with all over the years, but F1 is still the only one I will try to watch if there's a chance. It is in the upper-most reaches of any sport where the most drama, innovation and potential for excellence lies.

    NASCAR, and all circle-track events, are auto-racing for couch potatoes. Ditto for drag racing, which aside from the technology needed to get 5000 hp out of an engine, is about as exciting as an ox pull at a county fair. Much like all team sports (to my mind), if you've seen one circle-track or drag race, you've seen them all. Yawn.

    While roundy-round racing and piloting a AA Fuelie requires some skill, I really don't think it is much above the level of the average serious car enthusiast–the guy who has been to racing school, does regular track days, maybe has a race-only car. Certainly not better than top amateur road racers. The best guys are very good, but only at a limited number of things–and in cars that are equally limited. One top flight Nextel driver once said he “could take anyone who can fog a mirror and in a day or so have him running at race speed as long as the guy didn't lift off or have to dodge traffic.”

    In F1, OTOH, you have hugely powerful cars with prodigious capabilities and amazing technology driven on a wide array of tracks, including city streets, rain or shine. They are hard to drive well and that's why F1 attracts the alpha dogs of racing. To me it's not just the cars–there's a reason Formula 1 is called The World Drivers Championship.

    And Jim, since you work for Lenovo, are you finagling your way into the F1 operation?
